Sound Check is an audio measurement app for live sound engineers, built by Australian sound designer David Grigg. Your privacy matters to us, and this policy explains how the app handles your data.
Sound Check uses your iPad’s microphone to measure sound. The sound is analysed on your iPad as it arrives, and Sound Check never records it. No audio is saved, kept or sent anywhere. What the app keeps are the measurements.
Once you have allowed microphone access, the microphone stays on until you turn it off or close the app, even while the iPad is locked or another app is in front. That is so Daily Dose can count a whole day. While it is on, your iPad shows its orange microphone indicator.
A show holds the sound level across the performance, the markers you drop during it, and the details you give it: its name and, if you add them, a venue, an engineer, a production company and notes. It also stores the conditions it was measured under, such as the app version, which of the iPad’s microphones was used, and its calibration.
Daily Dose keeps a history of your own noise exposure, one day at a time. Your settings, including your calibration and the engineer name you set, are kept by the app on your iPad.
Shows you delete move to Recently Deleted rather than disappearing, and are removed permanently after 30 days. If a show is interrupted, the app keeps what it had so it can offer it back the next time it opens.
Everything Sound Check keeps lives on your iPad, in the app’s own storage. Your shows can also be seen in the Files app, one file per show. Sound Check never needs a connection to work.
Sound Check keeps a backup of your shows and your Daily Dose history in its own iCloud container under your Apple ID. Apple handles the encryption and storage of that data in accordance with their own privacy policy.
The copy on your iPad is always the one the app works from. The backup is read only when you choose to restore it, for example on a new iPad signed into the same Apple ID. You can turn Back up to iCloud off in Settings. The backup then stops being updated, and the copy already in iCloud is left where it is.
Sound Check does not operate any servers or cloud services of its own. There is no Sound Check account and no Sound Check cloud, and there is no way for the developer to see, retrieve or recover your shows.
You can share a show, or a report on one, through your iPad’s share sheet. A shared show is the whole show: its measurements, details, notes and markers. A report is made when you ask for it and handed straight to the share sheet, and Sound Check does not keep a copy. Where either goes next is entirely your choice. Sound Check has no way of knowing who you sent it to.
The camera in the top bar saves a picture of the tool’s screen to your Photos. Sound Check asks only for permission to add pictures. It cannot see or read anything already in your photo library.
Sound Check does not collect personal information. There are no user accounts, no sign-in and no registration. The app does not use analytics, tracking or advertising, and does not share any data with third parties.
The app makes no network requests of its own at all. The only thing it opens outside itself is your iPad’s Settings, when you need to turn on microphone or Photos access. Everything else happens on your iPad, or through Apple’s iCloud for the backup.
